On February 11, Bishop-elect Gregory Kelly will be ordained to the episcopate at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe and become the eleventh priest of the Diocese of Dallas to receive the fullness of the priesthood. Joining me as co-consecrators will be Archbishop-emeritus of Santa Fe Michael Sheehan and Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel, Auxiliary Bishop of Dallas. Bishop-elect Kelly was appointed auxiliary Bishop of Dallas and Titular Bishop of Jamestown by Pope Francis, Dec. 16, 2015
Canon Law provides that “When the pastoral needs of the diocese warrant it, one or several auxiliary bishops are to be appointed at the request of the diocesan bishop.” The Diocese of Dallas, one of the fastest growing dioceses in the nation has pastoral responsibility for 1.3 million Catholics.
Bishop-elect Kelly, who has served as a priest of the Diocese of Dallas for almost 34 years, will join Bishop Deshotel who was appointed auxiliary bishop in March 2010 in assisting me in the pastoral care of the diocese. We are indeed fortunate to have two such outstanding priests as auxiliary bishops. Bishop-elect Kelly, who has served as Vicar for Clergy since 2008 will continue in that important ministry and will also serve as a vicar general.
A native of La Mars, Iowa, Bishop-elect Kelly was reared in Colorado and attended Colorado State University before entering Holy Trinity Seminary for the Diocese of Dallas. Ordained to the priesthood in 1982, he received a Master of Divinity degree from the University of Dallas. After serving as assistant pastor at All Saints Parish in Dallas he returned and served as chaplain at UD for ten years. He then served as pastor of St. Gabriel Parish in McKinney for twelve years before being appointed Vicar for Clergy. He was named monsignor by Pope Benedict XVI in 2013.
Please join me in praying for a long and fruitful episcopal ministry for Bishop-elect Kelly.
