Thanks to the generosity of 191 golfers and the hard work of dedicated people, the Second Annual Bishop Farrell Invitational golf tournament was a stunning success that will make a Catholic education possible for many children.
While the figure for the total amount raised is not final, we anticipate that the event will net about $450,000 in scholarships, an increase of about $150,000 over the first tournament in 2011. That event netted $302,000 which provided scholarships for 250 students.
With many families struggling financially right now, the need for financial aid is greater than ever. Total enrollment for the current semester is down 2% from last year, an indication of how the weak economy is impacting registrations across the diocese.
The golfers enjoyed a beautiful day, great fellowship and a fun round of golf. But, more importantly, their participation will result in the gift of a Catholic education for many youngsters in needs. I am grateful to each of them for their support and to all those who worked so hard to make the day a success.
We look forward to an even more impressive Bishop Farrell Invitational in 2013.
