The Tragegy in Aurora

July 22, 2012 By Bishop Kevin J. Farrell

“Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God.”

                                                                               Isaiah 40:1

What occurred in Aurora, Colorado early Friday morning  stunned us all because of the unspeakable suffering caused by the incomprehensible actions of a single person. We can only turn to God and ask “why?” and recall again the tragic wisdom of Robert Burns’ famous line that “Man’s inhumanity to man makes countless thousands mourn.”

Our hearts and our prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones and the survivors whose  lives have been changed forever by this horrendous event.  As is so often the case such an occurrence not only demonstrates the inhumanity of which we humans are capable but also the levels of self-sacrifice and heroism yo which we can rise. I speak of those who died shielding others and those who faced death to rescue the wounded, including the police, medics and other first responders who’s actions probably prevented an even greater tragedy.
