At his audience Sunday at the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI called Catholics individually and in communities to participate “in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity to ask God for the gift of full unity among the disciples of Christ.”
Our search for unity is a mystery. We do not know how or when it will take place but we know that we must continue to seek it because of Jesus prayer to the Father (John 17:21)…” that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.”
Unity seems constantly just beyond our reach, yet in our lifetimes great advances have been made through the work of the Second Vatican Council and the many dialogues that are taking place with our Orthodox and Protestant separated communities.
Let us join the Holy Father in “asking God for the gift of full unity among the disciples of Christ.
