A well deserved recognition

June 10, 2010 By Bishop Kevin J. Farrell

“If St. Paul were alive today, he would have a Blackberry, a Laptop and a Blog…no doubt about it. Paul was a communicator, one of the greatest and he made the best possible use of the communication tools available to him in his day. He kept in touch with his people.”

I began my blog with the above words last December 19. I recall them today in connection with the outstanding work of David Sedeño and the staff of The Texas Catholic. The days of publishing a diocesan newspaper are long past. Today diocesan communication is a multi-media operation utilizing print, electronic, social media and streaming video.

As is the case with all the ministries of the Church of Dallas, The Texas Catholic is an extension of the threefold ministry of the Bishop, to govern, to teach and to sanctify. It is another way of connecting, of passing on our Catholic heritage of creating community.

At a meeting of The Catholic Press Association in New Orleans last week the accomplishments of The Texas Catholic staff were recognized with 12 awards in 11 categories. Both The Texas Catholic and El Católico de Texas were honored with the largest number of awards in The Texas Catholic history. They included news stories, feature stories, sports stories, religious photography and the online website. Among them were first place, second place third place and honorable mention awards.

David Sedeño and his staff don’t work to win recognition; they work to support the ministry of the Church of Dallas. In doing so the quality of their efforts shines through.

I congratulate them for their outstanding achievement.
