Congratulations to Bishop-elect Joseph E. Strickland fourth Bishop of Tyler,Texas. Pope Benedict XVI announced Bishop-elect Strickland’s episcopal appointment on September 29. He succeeds Bishop Alvaro Corrada, S.J., who was named Bishop of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico in 2011.

A native of Fredericksburg, Texas, the new bishop moved with his family to Atlanta, Texas as a child and grew up in the Diocese of Tyler. He attended Holy Trinity Seminary and the University of Dallas, where he was awarded a Master of Divinity degree in 1985. He was ordained to the priesthood that same year by Bishop Thomas Tschoepe of Dallas.

Father Strickland, ordained for the Diocese of Dallas, became a priest of the Diocese of Tyler when it was erected in 1987 and in 1994 he earned a licentiate in Canon Law from the Catholic University of America. Prior to his appointment last week, Bishop-elect Strickland had served as judicial vicar. vicar general and most recently as Delegate of the Apostolic Administrator.

I look forward to working closely with Bishop-elect Strickland in service to the Catholics of North and Northeast Texas.
